Economic Empowerment of Women Through India’s Automotive Industry

New Delhi, India; July 25th, 2024 – To accelerate women’s participation and advancement within India’s automotive industry, a project has been initiated by Good Business Lab (GBL), a non-profit organization, in partnership with the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association (ACMA), the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

In working with the associations and their members, GBL will help firms to identify structural barriers to gender parity and evaluate targeted solutions to improve working conditions, firm policies and practices, and hiring approaches. By collaborating directly with partner firms, the project aims to increase the share of women in India’s auto manufacturing workforce, which is currently at 5.6%.

Good Business Lab uses rigorous research methods to find a common ground between worker wellbeing and business interests. The organization seeks to bring insights from its previous worker wellbeing projects in the auto sector in Mexico and Argentina and further its footprint in the automotive industry. The initiative aims to enhance women’s representation and create a more inclusive and equitable Indian automotive industry in the long run.
